Is Umar good in Sea of Conquest?

A tier, and specifically designed as the support captain accessible to free-to-play players. His value is that you can actually build him.

Do I need a support ship?

Use a dedicated support ship when it improves the fleet more than the ship it replaces. A support-only flagship assignment is a separate placement decision.

Linae at equal stars, Umar in practice. Linae is out of reach for most accounts.

What ship should Umar captain?

Boreas or Primal Roar — the dedicated support hulls.

What gems does a support hero need?

Green, for Critical Resistance. Yellow damage gems give zero benefit to heroes who deal no damage.

Who else can fill the Surgeon slot?

Laila, Linae or Cordelia if you have them. Umar is the accessible default.
