Built ships also roll random skills, one of which can be Honed. So two copies of the same hull are genuinely different ships, and a rolled Legendary with three unusable skills is worse than an Epic with the right ones.

The strategy that follows: build toward the guarantee, not toward the roll. A 10% chance is not a plan, and pack versions of Warhammer and Stormbringer come with fixed skills, which is the real reason to consider them.

Why Random Skills Change the Maths

Most gacha thinking is about rarity. Here, rarity is only half of it.

Two Warhammers can differ substantially depending on what they rolled, and a Honed skill is a further multiplier on top. Which means:

Do not commit upgrade materials before checking the roll. Ship levels and parts are expensive, and pouring them into a badly-rolled Legendary is worse than finishing a well-rolled Epic.

A 6-star Epic beats a 2-star Legendary — and the ship equivalent holds. A fully upgraded, well-rolled Epic outperforms a half-finished Legendary with mediocre skills.

Judge the hull by what it actually does, not by its rarity badge. Every named hull is doing one of the five damage jobs — Artillery, Cutthroat, Strategic, Blazing or Drowning — see the ships hub.

What You Can Build, by Season

Shipbuilding introduces a new buildable hull most seasons:

Free-to-Play Strategy

1. Do not chase a specific Legendary. 10% is a lottery, and the shards, materials and time you spend chasing are gone whether or not it lands.

2. Run the free Epics meanwhile. Crimson Sentinel from the 7-day Pirate King's Trail and Providence from the 30-day Sea Voyage event are both free, both Epic, and both genuinely competitive when upgraded.

3. Build toward the luck counter. The guarantee is the only reliable route to a Legendary without spending.

4. Take what covers a gap. A Rare hull filling an empty fleet role beats a Legendary duplicating something you already do. From Season 3 a support ship is a required role — see the crew combinations guide.

5. Finish one hull before starting another. Three fully upgraded ships beat six half-built ones, at lower total material cost.

After You Build

Check the skills first. Decide whether this hull is worth investing in before spending anything.

Match the crew to the damage type. Each hero on a matching hull gets a free +20% attribute bonus — see best heroes for ships.

Then parts. Four slots — Cannon, Figurehead, Helm, Sail — across eleven sets with 2-piece and 4-piece bonuses. Two rules: percentage stats beat flat stats, and hold gold part-select boxes until you can complete a set.
